5 TIPS TO MAXIMIZE THE LIFE OF A UPS SYSTEMS
Look around your business and you’ll see computers, smartphones, tablets and other devices that have become so common that we rarely give them a second thought.
But what would happen if we turned off all those digital gadgets for just 24 hours?
Life wouldn’t be so convenient.
Any company relying on computers or electronic systems to operate must also have uninterruptible power supply systems so life of a UPS plays a vital role.
Such systems can be simple in design, but they require careful planning to ensure they are operational when needed most and cost-effective over the long term.
An APC UPS is specifically a small uninterruptible power supply that’s used in data centers and server rooms.
An APC UPS can significantly reduce the risk of unexpected downtime and hardware failure, but they don’t last forever. If you want your APC UPS to last as long as possible, you must take certain measures.
Below, you will find practical tips on how to maximize life of a UPS.
Here are 5 tips to maximize the life of a UPS Systems
1- Unit Placements
Unit placement is an important factor when it comes to taking care of your UPS Systems.
It is recommended that the UPS should be installed in a temperature-controlled environment where the temperature not exceeding 77° F (25° C). This is extremely important because every 8° C rise in temperature may reduce the UPS battery life in half.
The UPS should not be placed near open windows or areas that contain a high amount of moisture, and the environment should be free of dust and corrosive fumes.
It is recommended to leave at least 2 inches of space on each side of the unit for proper airflow and make sure that the ventilation openings should not be blocked at the front, side, or rear of the unit
2-Store replacement batteries properly
Buying replacement batteries is always a good idea but avoid storing the batteries for an extended period.
To maximize the life of the stored batteries, it is advised to keep them in a place with a cool temperature of – 50°F (10°C) or lower.
Newly-purchased batteries can be stored for up to 12 months and not more than that.
It has been noticed that batteries that are kept for too long will have a shorter lifespan. Permanent loss of capacity may occur within 18-30 months.
3- Perform regular maintenance
Be cautious of the batteries’ discharge status because over-discharging and excessive charging can cause charging problems and shorter battery life.
Fully discharged batteries must be recharged within 48 hours to prevent damage.
Due to corrosion and normal aging factors, the internal resistance of the battery rises.
Internal resistance can be measured through capacity testing.
Replace the battery if the increase reaches 30%. Dropping 80% from its original capacity is a sign of a “cooked” battery.
Here are some maintenance tips to maximize the life of a UPS
-Always keep the surface and sides of the battery clean
-Keep the battery corrosion and rust-free
-Replace your battery if dead or damaged
-Check the water level of the batteries every 2 months
-Always use the ventilated area for UPS Installation
4- Temperature
Most UPSs have a recommended operating temperature, typically from about 30°F to just over 100°F. approximately every 10°C (18°F) above the ambient temperature of 25°C (77°F), the life of a UPS and its battery will be reduced by 50 percent.
A battery’s rated capacity is based upon an ambient temperature of 25°C (77°F). The life expectancy of the battery will reduce if it is operated at a higher temperature.
5- Use energy-saving devices
Power-saving devices will extend the life of a UPS unit. You can replace some of the products at your place as per your comfortability.
Old equipment consumes a lot of energy. It’s not as efficient as before anymore.
-Replace light bulbs with LED type light bulbs
-Replace Conventional ovens (with heaters) with Microwave ovens
-Replace Appliances such as refrigerators, freezers, and air conditioners with Energy star rated
