Edge computing can be implemented on a small scale with an edge device such as a router with local storage dedicated to processing data from that specific edge device.
Or it can be implemented on a larger scale with an edge computing framework that enables you to deploy your own edge compute services in the cloud without having to build them from scratch.
An edge computing framework makes it quicker, easier and cheaper to implement edge computing because it offloads much of the heavy lifting onto the software so you don’t have to build these features yourself.
How Does an Edge Computing Framework Work?
An edge computing framework is a new way of handling data generated by IoT. It does not rely on only centralized data centers to process IoT data. Instead, it relies on more distributed processing at the edge of the network, where devices are located, and then sending them to a centralized server for final processing.
Edge computing improves IoT performance in two ways: – Edge devices are closer to the end user which means they will send less data across the network and there will be less latency with those transmissions. – The architecture is designed to be scalable, so even if there isn’t room at the edge for all of your IoT devices, additional space can be created at the edge or central servers can handle some of the load.

Types of Edge Computing
There are 4 types of Edge Computing broadly classified as
1- Internet of Things Edge
Internet of Things (IoT) is a network of devices that can sense or respond to their environment.
The main objective of IoT is to enable objects, devices, machines and services to connect securely and capable of detecting new data and commands, making them able to perform set actions in response. IoT Edge enables the local processing of all data generated by sensors, cameras and other sources.
2- On Premise Edge
Oftentimes, when we think of software, databases and servers come to mind. However, there are also applications like On Premise Edge (OPE) that aren’t as common as other programs.
OPE is an application used by businesses to streamline their operations. It has many different uses but most importantly it can help with the everyday tasks of your business.
3- Access Edge
Access edge devices are those that reside on the boundaries of networks with limited access such as branch offices, departmental buildings, or other locations where installing traditional routers is impractical.
These devices handle traffic coming into a network from public Internet Service Providers (ISPs) or other edge devices and filter it before sending it to the internal network.
4- Network Edge
As the name suggests, the network edge is the outermost boundary of your virtual private network (VPN). It’s the part of your network with the least amount of protection. In other words, it’s the most vulnerable and exposed section of your VPN.
If you have a small business or home office setup with just a couple computers, then you don’t need to worry about network edge space too much. However, if you are running a larger company with several locations or different departments, it’s essential that you know what exactly network edge space is in order to keep your sensitive data secure at all times.
